Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) is a video game in the Counter-Strike series that originally emerged as a "Mod" of Valve's Half-Life game and was published by Steam. Like its predecessors, it is an FPS (First Person Shooter) style game and was released on October 7, 2004. It differs mainly from its predecessors in that it uses a new video game engine known as Source (the same one that uses Half-Life 2), which is more powerful and has improved graphics, admitting for the first time in the series of effects like Normal mapping, reflections and HDR; it also uses the Havok physics engine, which makes physical effects like ragdolls and complex collision detection (instead of using collision boxes, polygons are used) possible. Unlike the previous games, this new Counter-Strike works exclusively under Steam, so you can't start the game without having an active account in it. To activate the account, you only need to have a valid cd-key for the game in question, since account maintenance is free. However, since the beginning of the game, a non-steam version has appeared, which allows you to play on cracked (illegal) servers without paying for the game. CS:S No-Steam users cannot enter the genuine servers.
